Powell River, here is the room in your life for more music
Tom Dowding is ready to rock you. As of this month, he is also ready to tune your piano, if need be.
One of the things I love most about Powell River is the sense of community and the willingness by the residents to support local small business. Powell River has a number of great business offerings by locals, and one of those services is “The Music Room.”
Tom has studied music for over 30 years and he decided to start a studio in his basement over 8 years ago. After buying a new house in 2010, the studio was moved to a new larger space that offers music lessons, music production, studio recordings, sound equipment rentals, and most recently the aforementioned piano tuning; just in time for the holidays.

Growing up as kids, my siblings and I were lucky enough to live in a great neighbourhood in Powell River across the street from Gordon Park. The house we lived in had a huge double bay garage with over-height ceilings. So large in fact, that my brother and his friends at one time built a 32 feet long half-pipe for skateboarding and BMX riding. It didn’t even take up half of the space. More than a decade after my family moved out of that house, Tom bought it. That garage space is what has now been converted into a full service music and recording studio.
They are flexible and are willing to teach any genre or style that you are into. This is the perfect place to get your kids starting playing an instrument, or sharpening your skills as an experienced musician. Another service they offer is a wedding or event DJ service. I’ve been lucky enough to attend a few events that were hosted by Tom, and I can speak firsthand about his talent and professionalism. The guy can rock a party.
