In what may become an annual tradition, a jolly group of organizers is planning a fundraiser at the Carlson Club (downstairs) in Powell River, called Vestivus. The event will take place Tuesday, December 12, starting at 7PM.

Tickets (a limit of 150) can be purchased in advance or at the door for $10, and 100% of proceeds are going to local charities. See details on the poster above.

Wear your favourite vest, donate and or bid to the silent or live auction, and enjoy a nonsecular night of merriment and good tidings. #vestivus

A Funny Story About a Vest

The background of Vestivus is a work of comedy. It started as a post by Brendan Behan, who asked if anyone had seen his precious, green MEC fleece vest.

Owing to the hilarity of posting about a decades-old piece of clothing that a well-meaning friend or family member probably had the good sense to burn, members were quick to react and comment. The search was on — but not for the vest. For great vest puns and merciless heckles.

A grassroots movement to find or replace the vest was born. Memes were created.

“Has anyone considered hiring a Private Investigator? He has put on the bravest face throughout this divestiture … but now we just need answers to this travesty.”

“It’s great to see people so invested in finding Brendan’s lost vest. It’s disarming.”

“It’s only a matter of time before the vestivities begin.”

And indeed, vestivities were planned. A fundraising idea was born. The founding organizers had the idea to (quickly) turn the fun into a party and fundraiser.

An Internet Joke Quickly Becomes a Full-Blown Charity Event

A venue was booked, more organizers were brought on board. Sponsors were contacted and will continue to be, right up until the event. Official non-profit status is being applied for and may be in place in time to get sponsors tax receipts.

The founding organizers have already donated enough cash to cover operating costs, meaning that 100% of the money raised will go to local charities. The founders agreed on an even four-way split between four local charities:

  • The Community Resource Center (CRC)
  • Powell River Therapeutic Riding Association
  • The Powell River Child, Youth, and Family Society
  • and the Powell River Food Bank

So put on your best or your ugliest vest, or cut the sleeves off our ugly Christmas sweater and come out and celebrate! There will be drinks, appetizers, and auction items. Would you like to donate to the auction? Every donation counts. Offer up something from your business, volunteer your kids for lawn mowing or driveway snow-shoveling, or donate your finest vest to the live vest auction.

Fun will be had, and local charities will be supported. Tell your friends! Want to sponsor? Comment here or contact us here at the Powtown Post and we will put you in touch with organizers. Alternatively, you can donate directly to the charities listed above.

  • Where: Carlson Club Downstairs, 4463 Joyce Avenue.
  • When: Tuesday, December 12 at 7 PM
  • Tickets: $10, available at the door and by advance purchase soon. Show your support by joining the Facebook event.

Oh and there will be cake: December 12th is Brendan’s 40th birthday.

From all of us at the Powtown Post, we hope your winter celebrations are the vest (we couldn’t help ourselves).
