As Canadians, we (stereotypically) love our coffee. Powell River has its fair share of coffee shops, cafes, and diners that are great to grab a fresh cup of java to sip on, and spend some quality time with friends and family.

This list is missing the obvious chain and franchise locations, because, well, we support local! And we encourage you to, as well.

So, where do you go when you want to fill up on some warm brew? Here are 4 local favourites:

Breakwater Books Cafe

Breakwater Books Cafe

Breakwater Books Cafe

4726 Marine Ave.

They specialize in local authors and West Coast themed books, and they will even special-order books for you. It’s a nice, quiet place to go and pick out some books, and have a steaming mug of cappuccino. There’s no better activity on a rainy day. For a treat, try some of their delicious fudge.

Julie's Airport Cafe

Julie’s Airport Cafe

Julie’s Airport Cafe

7550 Duncan St.

Both locals and visitors go to eat here–because of the fresh, homemade food and great, albeit a bit sassy, service. I swear people go there just to banter with Julie over coffee. The airport cafe has unique, aviation-themed decor, and a breakfast menu to match. They open bright and early, which is a bonus if you happen to be catching a flight or heading in to work. You will regularly see the parking lot full of pick-up trucks, which is the sign of a place that serves a good, hearty meal.

Magpie's Diner in Cranberry

Magpie’s Diner

6762 Cranberry St.

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and everything is made from scratch. Go for breakfast–have a coffee, and a crab cake eggs benny. Your coffee cup will always be full and piping hot.

River City Coffee

River City Coffee

River City Coffee

108-4871 Joyce Ave.

The place to find specialty organic coffee, and it’s “local to the last drop”. There’s also a great selection of tasty food, like breakfast wraps and baked goods, with plenty of gluten free options available, too. (I would opt for the cinnamon buns or carrot cake, myself.) Best couches in town to lounge on, and sometimes you can catch some local, live music.

From their website: “Base Camp was built for the community, a warm and welcome place to meet before going out on your journey. Our ever changing menu using local and seasonal ingredients, fresh coffee, local artwork and curated music are some of the reasons to come by and hangout.”

Reader Keely Spengler Fandrick says “Their Alpine cookie is killer, and they serve up 32 Lakes Coffee.”
