What is Cyclocross?

Wikipedia says:

Cyclocross is a form of bicycle racing. Races typically take place in the autumn and winter, and consist of many laps of a short course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles requiring the rider to quickly dismount, carry the bike while navigating the obstruction and remount.

In other words, it’s the perfect spectator sport and plenty of fun for all. If you ask us, cyclocross is also the most inclusive type of bike racing there is, and perfectly represents the Powtown vibe. Don’t want to race? Come down and cheer or heckle. Or see if you can get the racers to accept a gift (referred to as a “hand-up”) while they ride past. Think marshmallows, Twizzlers, cookies, or cups of mysterious liquid.

Fast or slow, serious or silly, there’s something in cyclocross for you. And Taws Bike Garage is offering a clinic before the event to teach you all about it. Read below for all of the info, straight from Taw’s:

Start Here: Free Cyclocross Clinic

Wednesday, September 11th 5:30 – Location TBA

Learn about what happens in a CX race. A brief primer on mounting/dismounting and cornering. Participate in a short race circuit.

Do I need a Cyclocross bike? Nope! This course will be very mountain bike friendly and anyone can participate!

Here’s a little video from our friends on the Island at Cross on the Rock. The COTR series kicks off in Cumberland on September 8th.
