7 patios in PR to knock back a cold one
Sunny weather seems to go hand in hand with a nice cold drink, doesn’t it?
That’s why we’ve compiled a list of what we think are the best patios in Powell River to knock back a cold one–of whatever your drink of choice might be.
1. The Laughing Oyster
10052 Malaspina Rd
If you’re making the drive north to Okeover Arm, chances are, you’re headed to the Laughing Oyster restaurant. If you’re smart, you’ve reserved a seat on the patio–the only way to truly enjoy your oceanfront dining experience with an unobstructed view of Okeover Inlet. With a menu full of fresh seafood, my suggestion would be to ask your server for a wine pairing to go with your meal.
2. The Shinglemill Pub & Bistro
6233 Powell Place
Built in 1986 and located on Powell Lake, the Shinglemill is situated on a property that used to house a mill that produced shingles (hence the name!). In the summer, the marina at the Shinglemill is a high traffic zone for people launching their boats to go up to their cabins on Powell Lake. The patio makes for great people- and boat-watching. Shinglemill’s better-than-pub-fare with daily specials is most likely best paired with a beer or wine of your choice.
3. Strikers Bar & Grill
4478 Marine Ave.
This little bar and grill is attached to a bowling alley in the centre of town, right above the Westview Ferry Terminal. Drink suggestion? The daily special. It could be Townsite Brewery draught (Monday), or a double Caesar (Sunday). It’s also a popular spot for motorcyclists to stop in for a beer–but don’t worry, they’re friendly.
4. The Savoury Bight
7074 Westminster St.
They’re located right on the water, so you can eat a gourmet meal while watching the resident eagles fly by the oceanfront patio. They have a great wine and scotch selection, so order the lamb shank and a glass of cabernet sauvignon, cozy up by the open fire pit, and stay a while.
5. Costa del Sol
4578B Marine Ave.
Located in the centre of town on Marine Avenue in a rebuilt 1900’s police station with a view of the Malaspina Strait. Taste their fresh, authentic Mexican and Latin cuisine–made with local ingredients whenever possible–and pair it with a bottle of Corona, Pacifico, or Negra Modelo.
6. The Breakwater Inn Pub (at the Historic Lund Hotel)
1436 Highway 101
Take in the panoramic views of Lund Harbour, Savary Island, and more. You might even catch a glimpse Jim Pattison’s motor yacht, the Nova Spirit, or others like it, as they head north into Desolation Sound. Down at the dock, the water taxi picks up and drops off passengers bound for Savary Island. So as you can see, it can be a busy little spot in the summertime–and the patio makes for a nice relaxing spot to drink (see what I did there?) it all in. Order some appetizers, like calamari, and have an ice cold beer.
7. Coastal Cookery
4553 Marine Ave.
Owned by the same people that brought you Costa del Sol, and probably the newest spot on this list, Coastal Cookery is becoming a new town favourite for it’s tremendous service, and great vibe. Of course the food is nothing to laugh at, either. There is no bad choice on this menu. Start with the Salt Spring mussels, and order one of their signature cocktails to go with it, like the Texada Mule or the Powell Riviera.
Now you have no excuse to say there are no great patios in Powell River. Get out there and enjoy the sunshine!
