Annual Steve Steele Memorial Soccer Match 2016
- Date: Mon, Dec 26, 2016
- Time: 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm
- Location: Brooks Secondary School turf field
Looking to enjoy a sporting event/small town reunion this Boxing Day?
Then come out to the Annual Steve Steele Memorial Soccer Match Monday, December 26th.
Powell River Villa soccer players will mix up with men’s league players to square off to raise funds for cancer research. Meanwhile off the pitch, generations of soccer fans plus families of old and new residents chat while taking in the soccer game. All this would be right up the alley, for Steve Steele, a man whose name was synonymous with Powell River soccer for decades. Known as a competitive soccer player, coach and dedicated referee, the charity match is named after the man who loved the sport. When Steele succumbed to cancer in 1993 the match was renamed in his honor. Previously the Boxing Day match was a fundraiser for the Cup of Milk fund sponsored by the former Powell River News since the late 1960’s.
The game also points to a quality that illustrates the character of Powell River. It’s a fitting way to celebrate the holiday and give recognition of Steele’s contribution to soccer. Plus the event serves as an informal winter reunion for the community.
Everyone is welcome to show up Monday December 26, at the Brook’s turf. Kick-off is 1:30 p.m. on the Brooks Secondary School turf field.
Meet friends old and new and take in the Steve Steele Memorial game!
