Do You Know the Best Facebooker in Powell River?
Best Facebooker / Instagrammer is a contentious category–and strangely, probably the most coveted win in the whole Best of Powell River contest.
The three top places handily went to three of the most wildly diverse men in Powell River: Full Solutions Computers owner, extreme runner and tech guru Joseph McLean; CJMP DJ, Terracentric Adventures wilderness guide and Phish fan Ari Dublion; and carpenter / contractor / father of two Gee Welp.
On social media, they are also wildly different, in interests, politics, and behaviour, from harnessing public sentiment in tender and rather long missives (Joseph); to advocating for pot and Palestinians (Ari); to provocateur-style trolling and goofbag meme sharing (Gee).
Who you think is the best social media star depends entirely on what you think Facebook is for. Do you log on to be challenged or comforted? Entertained or politicized? How much of what you read do you take seriously?
One attribute that all three men share is they post a lot. They’re all followed by their own groupies. They all seem to take their role as public spokespeople to heart – some would say, for better or for worse.
I’ll argue for better – always, for all of them. Like Speakers Corner in Hyde Park in London, social media IMHO should be a melee of loudly spoken ideas, opinions, anecdotes, jokes and news. Social media is performative. It’s revealing. It’s the new newspaper.
Functionally, social media should push us out of our intellectual bubbles, and into a broader, more authentic understanding of the interior lives of the people with whom we share our cities and neighbourhoods.
All three Best Facebooker winners handily feed those ideals. So congratulations, Joseph, Ari and Gee. Please keep being fully yourselves – out there, online, where we can all gape at your audaciousness from the safety of our darkened basements.
