How can you help the herring?
On the cover of Powell River Living’s March issue, we ran a beautiful image of herring roe, snapped by Terry Brown. He also co-authored the story about the return of the herring, with his partner Jude Abrams.
The story is, for 30 years, the food fish had almost disappeared from the Powell River area. In 2014, it returned.
Since the beginning of March, though, we’ve come to realize that the herring may be threatened again.
A commercial herring fishery in Powell River and Tla’amin waters (Area 15) has not yet been ruled out by the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
So, a vocal campaign to protect local herring has emerged.
Tla’amin First Nation told the Vancouver Sun and the Powell River Peak, among others, that a commercial herring fishery is not welcome in the area.
If you would like to support Tla’amin First Nation in its call for no commercial fishing of herring in this area, Terry suggests the following actions:
1. Leave the herring to rebuild their local population by not taking any herring until the stock rebuilds to satisfy ecosystem needs after which a local fishery can be allowed.
2. Write to the Fisheries Minister (hunter.tootoo@parl.gc.ca); PR City Council (info@cdpr.bc.ca) and Regional District (administration@powellriverrd.bc.ca); and the Prime Minister (justin.trudeau@parl.gc.ca), letting them know you support the Tla’amin Resolution prohibiting commercial herring fishing in our area (area 15 for DFO).
3. Take action to stop commercial herring fishing if the boats appear in our waters.
And a fourth thing is Reporting any Spawning activity to Terry and Jude 604-414-6666, info@otterbegood.com
